Abstract:

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission control by combining intermittent activated carbon adsorption and plasma oxidation was investigated. Activated carbon adsorption in fact is to utilize the adsorption character of activated carbon to adsorb organic compounds of exhaust gas at low thickness and large blast volume and condense. Plasma oxidation in fact is to use hot air to heat organic solvent adsorbed and make it boiling and desorbed from active carbon, and this exhaust gas of high thickness is led into the reactor of plasma oxidation. When adsorbed, the toluene removal rate reached 100% at the beginning of 2 h, and decreased with increasing of time. The toluene degradation rate reached the max 97.3% in the plasma oxidation process. The major gas phase products detected by FT-IR from the decomposition of toluene with air participation were CO, CO2, H2O and NO2. A possible reaction mechanism for toluene destruction by glidarc technology is proposed and summarized.
