Comparison of microbial metabolic characteristics in UV-biofilter and biofilter treatment processes
|
Abstract:
To investigate the effects of UV pretreatment on microorganisms in a subsequent biofilter, the changes of microbial metabolic characteristics inside a biofilter with UV pretreatment (UV-BF) and a standalone biofilter (BF) were studied. The Biolog method was used to analyze microbial metabolic characteristics. The average well color development values of UV-BF samples were 0.024~0.045 cm-1·h-1, while the AWCD values from the BF samples were 0.023~0.038 cm-1·h-1. This result indicated that the microbial metabolic activity in the UV-BF was a little higher than that in the BF. Moreover, the microorganisms in both biofilters demonstrated different metabolic characteristics. The microorganisms in the UV-BF showed higher metabolic activities for amines, alcohols and carbohydrates, but lower higher metabolic activities for polymers than those in the BF system. The microbial samples from UV-BF and BF showed the same metabolic activities for lipids, amino acids and carboxylic acids.
