Initial adsorption of organic substrates onto anaerobic granular sludge
|
Abstract:
Initial adsorption characteristics of organic substrates in wastewater onto anaerobic granular sludge and the environmental effects of the adsorption were studied by a static batch method at the laboratory scale. The results indicated that, similar to aerobic activated sludge, the initial adsorption onto anaerobic granular sludge was very fast and pseudoequilibrium could be reached in 10 min. Physical adsorption played a significant role in the initial adsorption process and accounted for about 70% percent of the total COD removed. The adsorption data fit the Freundlich isotherm well (R2=0.9702). It was also found that pH was an important factor in the adsorption process. At pHs between 5 and 9, the amount adsorbed was large and the average value could reach 131.19mg·g-1 , but the amount adsorbed gradually decreased when the pH was less than 5 or greater than 9. Temperature also affected the adsorption of anaerobic granular sludge, but the effect was minimal.
