The application of effective-medium theory in the plane-wave expansion method for analyzing photonic crystals

Abstract:
By applying the effective-medium theory,a new plane-wave expansion method is presented.It is shown that,through calculating the frequency bands of a photonic crystal,the new method has the advantages of fast convergence and high accuracy over the two plane-wave expansion methods commonly used.The new method is more suitable than other methods for analyzing high-dimensional photonic crystals with an arbitrary shape of inclusions.
