American shad (Alosa sapidissima) Resource
|
Abstract:
The American shad played an important part in the fishery history of the United States. Since the beginning and middle of the 1900s, however, dam-building, pollution, and overfishing have decimated shad populations. Today, many people have never even heard of the fish. Luckily, efforts to restore the shad are underway and annual shad festivals are helping people of the Chesapeake region learn about and celebrate this natural and cultural treasure.
