Anticancer Activity of Senna Leaf and Fenugreek Seed against Lung and Prostate Cancer Cell Lines

Yousef M. Almutairi, Naif M. Alhawiti, Elbert Lewis Myles, William Boadi
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The United States is anticipated to experience 1,958,310 new cases of cancer and 609,820 cancer-related deaths in 2023. The most common cases of cancer are breast cancer, prostate cancer, leukemia, thyroid cancer, bladder cancer, and liver cancer. Cancer treatment represents a major challenge for governments and the health and pharmaceutical fields, due to the high cost in addition to the presence of side effects. Plants are a rich source o...

Effect of Lignocellulose Waste-Biomass Pretreatment of the Peels of Musa acuminata (Banana) and Ananas comosus (Pineapple) on the Production of Bioethanol via Solid-State Fermentation

Nyinchuo Evate, Pride Ndasi Ngwasiri, Wilson Agwanande Ambindei, Ngwa Martin Ngwabie, Martin Benoit Ngassoum
The use of fruits both domestically and industrially generates waste from their discarded peels which may lead to environmental pollution and contamination. This work aims at evaluating the effects of chemical pre-treatment of biomass on the physicochemical properties and the effects of process parameters on the production of ethanol via solid-state fermentation. The biomass was dried, ground and subjected to chemical pretreatment using H2SO4 and NaOH. pH, total Titratable ...

Extraction, Synthesis and Characterization of an Alkyd Resin from Sesamum indicum Seed Oil

Kalu M. Kalu, Michael Emmanuel, Emmanuel K. Chinedu, Ayodele Akinterinwa, Uhiene Titus, Rome Kenneth, Naibi A. Haruna, Buba A. Aliyu
The synthesis and characterization of Sesamum indicum seed oil have been thoroughly examined. The seed oil was extracted and utilized in formulating alkyds with varying oil lengths of 40%, 50%, and 60%. The in-situ process for the synthesis was analyzed, revealing significant properties associated with the different oil lengths, including changes in degree of polymerization, average molecular weight, and, notably, the extent of reaction favoring the 40% oil length alkyd resin. Furthermore, the c...

Quantification of Aloin in Aloe barbadensis Miller Leaf Gel and Latex from Selected Regions of Kenya

Caroline K. Nakiguli, Viola J. Kosgei, Jackson K. Cherutoi, John Odda
Aloe barbadensis Miller (A. barbadensis) has been reported for use in the traditional management of malaria in Kenya. Aloin (an anthraquinone-C-gly-coside) is one of the therapeutic molecules in Aloe species that is responsible for their antimalarial effect. However, there is no report on the aloin content of A. barbadensis leaves latex and gel from Kenya. This study, therefore, isolated and quantified aloin levels in Phosphate Buffered Saline (PBS) extracts of A. ...

Are Irrational Numbers (Like the Square Root of the Number Seven) Applicable to Genetic Sequences?

Tahir Olmez
According to Quantum Perspective Model, this article researches whether there is a link between the square root of seven numbers and the genetic sequences. At first, the square root digits of the number seven after the comma are added respectively. Secondly, the resulting sum corresponds to the nucleotide bases, the results obtained in this way are expressed as nucleotide bases. (A, T, C, G, and U). (A) Adenine, (T) Thymine, (C) Cytosine, (G) Guanine, (U) Uracil. From this point of view, when th...

Palm Kernel De-Oiled Cake: A Potential Source of Cellulose for the Production of Carboxylmethyl Cellulose for Industrial Uses

Ikechukwu Kingsley Ubaoji, Ndika Vincent Ezea, Chidozie Sunday Umerie
The problem of over dependence on foreign raw materials such as Carboxylmethyl cellulose for Nigerian industries has been a big threat to the country’s economy. In order to curtail the menace, this work aims at the production of Carboxylmethyl cellulose which serves as a thickening agent, emulsifier, stabilizer, extender etc. from palm kernel de-oiled cake. Palm kernel de-oiled cake was converted to Carboxylmethyl cellulose (CMC), a derivative of cellulose by two reaction steps, mercerization an...

Evaluating the Protective and Ameliorative Potential of Unripe Palm Kernel Seeds on Monosodium Glutamate-Induced Uterine Fibroids

Orinamhe Godwin Agbadua, Lilian Etinosa Idusogie, Amadi Samuel Chukwuebuka, Chukwu Sunday Nnamdi, Samuel Sylvester
The study investigated the protective and curative effects of unripe palm kernel seeds on monosodium glutamate-induced uterine fibroid in rats. The rats were in eight experimental groups according to the time of administration of the unripe palm kernel seeds: the first four groups investigated protective effects of UPK for 28 days and the last four groups investigated the curative effects of UPK after treatment with MSG for 28 days. MSG was administered to the animals by oral gavage at a dose of...

Eliminating Cyanobacteria and Controlling Algal Organic Matter—Short Notes

Djamel Ghernaout, Noureddine Elboughdiri
Coagulation and flocculation processes could reduce particulate algal cells efficiently, but they are not so performant in dealing with solubilized algal organic matter in potable water factories. This work reviews the main findings found in recent publications. Many techniques used in the water treatment industry encounter the problem of microalgae lysis, toxin release, and degradation. Indeed, chemical coagulants such as alum and pre-oxidation injecting chlorine can trigger demolition to algal...
