%X adolescent development results not only from the strengths and vulnerabilities of the individual adolescent but from the opportunities available in the contexts where adolescents interact daily. this article broadens the understanding of adolescent development by focusing on the role and opportunities that daily life contexts afford to promote competencies and skills in adolescents. the article addresses two challenges for social policy, namely social inequality and the enhancement of social capital. it argues for a positive view of adolescence that focuses on the promotion of competence rather than at-risk behaviors. the need to develop positive indicators of adolescent development and well-being is stressed and guidelines for action are discussed.
