%X this paper presents a reevaluation ofthe valle el encanto rock art site (ovalle, regi¨®n of coquimbo, chile). the limar¨ªstyle ivas originally definedat this site and ivas interpreted as associated chronologically with the el molle complex, a representative culture ofthe early ceramic period in chile's semiarid north. based on a cr¨ªticalassessment ofthe assumptions that led to this interpretation, and also through a new analysis ofthe rock art itself we have proposed dividing its representations into three main sets, associated with the late archaic, early ceramic and late intermediate/late periods. through the results, we discuss and redefine the topic ofrock art expression in chile's semiarid north.
