%X the press is the oldest mass media there is, and although at present the technologies have changed the medium in which these texts are published or how they reach readers, the journalistic discourse has certain features that allow us to know something of the society in which it occurs and, because of this, are a refection of the society in a certain moment. for this reason, and on the occasion of the bicentennial of chile, it is pertinent to go back to the beginnings of the press in our country and try to approach the period of independence through the journalistic texts published in la aurora de chile and el monitor araucano, the first newspapers in our country, through a discursive approach, with special attention to the context and referents of the daily life of the young country.
