%X artificial oxygen carriers may be grouped into two categories: hemoglobin-based solutions and perfluoro-chemical based emulsions. allogenic erythrocyte transfusions represent a limited resource and are associated with adverse events such as acute transfusion reactions, transmission of infectious diseases, immuno-suppression and postoperative infections. although "artificial blood" is not yet a clinical reality, several temporary "artificial oxygen carriers" are in late stage clinical development.
