%X bleeding from esophageal varices is the most severe complication of portal hypertension, and should be managed in specially trained centers. vasoactive drugs, mainly octreotide, plus endoscopic treatment are able to control bleeding in 90% of the cases. rescue treatments like tips and surgery should be immediately available for those who do not stop bleeding or have varices difficult to manage.
