%X this work analyses the possibilities and limitatios of placing the archaeological formative sites the cafayate (salta) micro-region from the chronological point of view. records show peculiarities that do not correspond well with the antecedents of this subregion. absolute radiocarbon-dated indicators as well as the relative ones, such as rock art, pottery technology and different kinds of placement in the south of calchaqu¨ª valley were used to estimate the pre-santamariana occupations chronologically. on a micro-regional scale there was a progress in the chronological, technological, ritual and territorial knowledge. this information shows that the social processes were peculiar and that populations were part of a dynamics different from the regional one
