Revista chilena de ingenier¨ªa %D 2012 %I Scientific Electronic Library Online %R 10.4067/S0718-33052012000100004 %X ports are a node within the transport chain, so that to determine and evaluate the external connectivity of chilean ports with chile's main commercial partners is a key element in analyzing port competitiveness with regards to chile's increasing foreign trade. this research is based on the unctad research guidelines concerning the external connectivity of countries. in this study, this methodology was modified and applied to assess the external connectivity of chilean ports handling containers. using market share criteria, seven ports were chosen to be studied, and for each port nine connectivity rates were calculated, which were then used to calculate the port external connectivity index (icep) proposed in this work. the results showed that the ports of iquique, valpara¨ªso and san vicente provide greater opportunities for exporters to access supply chains that are more suitable for their products or to access different markets from the same port. however, when comparing the areas surrounding the ports in the fifth and eighth regions, it was found that the southern ports had better maritime accessibility conditions and could attract more shipping companies to the area. the ports of central chile present no major differences for exporters with regard to external connectivity. in contrast, the southern ports through san vicente port offer exporters better market access. %K ports %K connectivity %K port competitiveness %K international trade %K index. %U http://www.scielo.cl/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&pid=S0718-33052012000100004&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en
