%X we report a new record of the chinchilla chinchilla for the atacama region, chile. it is based on pictures of specimens taken by camera-traps in the nevado tres cruces national park and around, and remains of feces and bones found along mountain borders with abrupt slopes or rocky outcrops, both formations exhibited medium size caves. there are not scientific reports of this species in the atacama region in the last fifty years. we analyze the conservation status of this species in the light of the new records of populations from chile and argentina.
