%X the la corona regional archaeological project is studying the northwestern peten region (guatemala), where the ancient maya city of la corona is located. this site has been recently identified as the unknown site q. the research at la corona has included excavations of monumental and settlement architecture, mapping, use of remote sensing and ecological and paleo-climate studies. viewed from the political organization models, investigations at la corona present an opportunity to study the nature and political relations of secondary sites. epigraphic data show a direct affiliation between la corona and the ruling dynasty of calakmul, suggesting that la corona could have been a key center for the expansionistic strategies of calakmul during the sixth and seventh centuries a.d. in this paper we present some of the results obtained in the investigations carried out between 2005 and 2009.
