%X the andean community (can) is the most advanced form of regional economic association in the american hemisphere. unfortunately, their financial limitations and the proliferation of trade restrictions have slowed down the development of their programs and the construction of a real common market. this study describes the non-tariff barriers commonly applied to important agricultural products in the region, the importance of these barriers to the future of the can, their reason for being, the impact of the new scenarios emerging with venezuela's withdrawal, colombia and peru's entry into free trade agreements with the united states, and finally the expectations derived from the future signing of an association agreement with the european union, including a free trade agreement. finally, this study formulates a set of proposals to dismantle these restrictions.
