%X this paper studies the origin of muslim political thought, which from its beginnings, appeared as a political-religious community, identifying both aspects. the foundation of islam is religious, not political thought: the revelation of the one god, the infinitely exalted creator, benefactor, judge of men and their pretension to £¿unconditional dedication£¿ (islam). islam knows no distinction between secular law and religious law, between the sacred and the civil, between religion and state. the practical consequence of this identification is the always-present temptation of sectarianism and discrimination (typical of religions) against those who do not profess its same theological principles, the inevitable fruit of the dangerous political-religious binomial. furthermore, the article studies the precursors and main representatives of muslim political philosophy during the medieval period, the period when this thought was born and developed.
