%X helicobacter pylori infection results, in some patients, in chronic inflammation of the stomach, atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer. the molecular mechanisms that lead from infection to chronic inflammation and gastric cancer are not understood. the degree of inflammation varies and depends on the h. pylori strain and the host response against the infection. the inflammatory response is regulated by cytokines, some of which have been associated with acid gastric secretion changes and with increased risk of stomach cancer and some precancerous lesions. nevertheless, the relationship between cytokines and gastric cancer is not clear yet. this review focuses on the inflammatory processes associated with the development of gastric malignancies.
