%X the text below is part of a comparative study between the urban revitalization process of the "meatpacking district" in new york city, and the urban revitalization projects of regi£¿o da luz, in sao paulo, brazil. the article's objectives are to undertake a critical overview of the main urban sociology theories and to reflect about the ways in which comtemporary sociology is being in need of a revision of its definitions about what cities are. this analysis considers the processes of urban revitalization and gentrification, that are becoming more frequent in cities all over the world.
