In traditional society, intimate relationships are those that provide positive feedback such as love, support, and bonding. In the digital society, they mainly manifest as digital extensions of real-life intimate relationships and intimate relationships that are entirely based on digital virtual identities. “Digital intimacy” refers to a state of intimacy that is both connected and differentiated in digital practice. To investigate the impact of digital technology on intimate relationships among young people, this study conducted semi-structured interviews with 14 young people and found that the “digital intimacy” relationship is specifically manifested as the digital maintenance of real-life intimate relationships and the construction of digital intimate relationships entirely based on virtual identities. On this basis, this article summarizes the construction mechanism of “digital intimacy” and concludes that its essence is the structural intervention of digital technology in the intimate relationships of young people. At the same time, due to the “stage” characteristics of digital communication spaces, new and unique intimate relationships have been developed. Finally, further reflection is needed on digital intimacy relationships in order to comprehensively examine this particular state of relationship.
