Cai Fuyi is a dual representative of political and literary circles in the late Ming Dynasty. Scholarly attention has primarily centered on Cai Fuyi’s intellectual engagement with Jingling School poets Zhong Xing and Tan Yuanchun, as well as the interaction with Fujian literati, but often ignores the independence of his creation. Through a systematic investigation of his life and writings, it can be seen that although Cai’s poetry style was influenced by Jingling, he always maintained a distinct personal style. The traditional view that Cai Fuyi was simply a vassal of Jingling School was biased, and the so-called criticism of “abandoning his studies” was even more inconsistent with his actual creative features. Re-examining Cai Fuyi’s literary position is of great significance to understanding the complex interaction of literary schools in the late Ming Dynasty.
