Emily Dickinson was one of the most influential poets in 19th-century American literary history. Her poetry is characterized by obscurity and depth of meaning, with gaps being a notable feature of her work. This paper, from the perspective of Mitchell’s Picture Theory, employs both literature review and close reading methods to interpret and fill in the gaps of explicit images in Dickinson’s nature poems. The study finds that through these gaps, Dickinson constructs multiple interpretive spaces in her poems, enabling readers to engage in profound dialogue with the text through the process of filling these gaps. This interaction not only enriches the poems’ connotations but also implicitly articulates Dickinson’s profound reflections on female independence, the philosophy of life, and love. This research provides a new theoretical perspective for understanding the artistic characteristics of Dickinson’s poems while expanding the application of Picture Theory in literary studies.
