William Faulkner, in his classic short story A Rose for Emily, portrays the tragic fate of Miss Emily, the last aristocratic lady of the Grierson family. The oppression and regulation of women in Southern traditional society, particularly the pervasive influence of patriarchy and Puritan ideals of womanhood, form the foundational causes of this tragedy. From the perspective of Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity, the protagonist Emily, under the constraints of social norms, “consciously” repeats and internalizes the performance of traditional female identity, thereby being shaped into a “monumental” symbol within Southern culture. However, her actions simultaneously imply resistance to and transcendence of prescribed gender roles, revealing a woman struggling to survive within patriarchal structures and societal expectations while attempting to break free from them. Ultimately, Faulkner, with both sympathy and admiration, offers a rose to honor Emily’s courage and defiance in challenging the power structures of Southern society.
