Shiga Naoya’s introspective novel In Kinosaki is often analyzed through the lens of views on life and death. However, examining it from a traumatic perspective reveals the author’s equally profound reflections on the shortcomings of capitalist development and post-Meiji Restoration social conditions. In reality, after recovering physically from his accident and convalescing in Kinosaki, Shiga also experienced psychological healing, as evidenced by his reconciliation with his father three months after completing the novel. Through analyzing depictions of the deaths of three small animals and their surrounding environments, this paper explores the author’s personal and societal traumas, as well as his healing process.
