This paper delves into the poetic manipulation mechanism in multimodal translation, dissecting the translation strategies of literary covers and their cultural implications. Grounded in André Lefevere’s theory, it compares the modal disparities of The Three-Body Problem covers across multiple languages. Findings uncover that the English first-edition cover sets a Western sci-fi narrative model, shaping other language-version creations. In the verbal mode, translations conform to target-culture poetics through techniques like supplementary details, endorsements from renowned figures, and mentions of accolades. Visual-mode covers vary: the English one emphasizes scientific exploration, the Chinese stresses human-universe emotions, and the Hungarian and Thai versions enrich connotations with local cultural symbols. In essence, poetic manipulation pervades multimodal translation. By fine-tuning modal elements, it overcomes cultural divides, facilitating the global spread of literary works.
