This study employs Foucault’s theory of discipline to analyze the phenomenon of homonymous conflicts in “Zhan Sai” and “Carpenter Gengga” from The Ruyi Story Collection. By dissecting the power-disciplinary mechanisms embedded in naming practices, it reveals how dominant groups violently reinforce identity boundaries, while subaltern groups resist through wisdom yet remain trapped in power cycles. Findings indicate that homonymic tensions reflect struggles over symbolic ownership of identities. Although individual resistance temporarily disrupts discipline, it fails to dismantle the power system’s self-repair capacity, ultimately forming a dynamic interplay between discipline and resistance that mirrors the enduring resilience of hierarchical social orders.
