Translation universals are patterns found in translated languages that are independent of the source language, target language or translators’ identity. Existing studies on translation universals mainly focus on direct translation, exploring how the conversion of two languages influences translation universals. This study, therefore, attempts to investigate a special translation behavior, relay translation, in translating Chinese classics. Specifically, the translation of Dao De Jing (Tao Te Ching) is taken as an example for analysis for a quantitative linguistic comparison between direct and relay translation to explore whether multiple language conversions affect translation universals. Results show that translated versions produced by direct and relay translation do exhibit universal patterns in vocabulary richness and textual style. Yet, relay translation demonstrates significant differences in activity and descriptivity. Future studies could further specify the weight of each quantitative linguistic index for a more fine-grained research model on variation mechanism of translation universals.
