Based on the theoretical framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this study analyzes the evaluative meaning in “Young Goodman Brown” through the attitude system, focusing on the moral dilemmas and crises of faith within the story. By examining the shift in Brown’s attitudes toward others, the study explores how interpersonal meanings of distrust and emotional conflict are conveyed through linguistic forms, revealing Hawthorne’s profound reflection on human nature. The study shows that the attitude system plays a significant role in constructing the narrative, reflecting the emotional transformation of Brown and uncovering the text’s core themes. The affect system reveals Brown’s emotional journey from positivity to negativity and his painful growth; the judgment system reflects the moral dilemmas and emotional struggles he undergoes after a series of events in the forest, and the appreciation system illustrates Brown’s insight into evil and the destabilization of his religious beliefs. Through systematic analysis, this study reveals how Hawthorne employs linguistic resources to construct the protagonist’s inner conflict, thereby deepening the understanding of the novel’s themes and reflections on human nature.
