This paper discusses the transmission of visual, auditory and other modal elements in Howard Goldblatt’s translation of Red Sorghum from the perspective of multimodal translation theory. By analyzing the accurate expression and transmission of the modal elements of the original work in Howard Goldblatt’s translation, the translation strategies he used are summarized, aiming to propose how to express and transmit modal elements in cross-cultural communication. There are a large number of modal elements in Red Sorghum, which vividly show the unique Chinese culture. However, in the translation process, due to the differences between Chinese and foreign cultures, how to accurately transmit these modal elements is a challenge that the translator needs to face. Howard Goldblatt’s translation of these modal elements is very accurate and exquisite. Summarizing his translation strategies is expected to provide help for translation practice activities from the perspective of multimodal translation theory, which can better help Chinese culture go global and better tell Chinese stories.
