This paper focuses on the Ci poetry of Ning He, a prime minister of the Five Dynasties, and Shu Yan, a prime minister of the Northern Song Dynasty, exploring the developmental trajectory of the Huajian School from the Five Dynasties to the Northern Song period through comparisons of their creative contexts, thematic subjects, and stylistic approaches. The study reveals that Ning He’s works adhere to the Huajian tradition, characterized by ornate and delicate aesthetics, with themes centered on court life and romantic expressions that epitomize the poetic style of the Five Dynasties. In contrast, Shu Yan, while inheriting the Huajian tradition, infused his poetry with the existential reflections and philosophical contemplations of scholar-officials, pioneering a new 婉约 (wanyue) style marked by “leisurely elegance and emotional profundity”. Despite both being prime minister-poets, their divergent historical contexts and cultural environments led to significant differences in their perceptions of Ci’s functional role and aesthetic orientations. This research offers a fresh perspective for understanding the evolution of Ci poetry during the Tang-Song transition.
