The Immoralist is a classic work by André Gide, which follows the protagonist Michel’s gradual liberation from societal constraints and indulgence in his desires and instincts. The novel portrays the conflict and struggle between the release of human instincts and adherence to social ethics. This paper adopts a psychoanalytic perspective, utilizing Freud’s theory of personality structure, to analyze the changes in the distribution of energy among the id (desires and impulses), ego (reality regulation), and superego (moral constraints) within Michel. It explores how the imbalance among these three aspects exacerbates Michel’s internal conflict, ultimately leading him towards immorality. This analysis aims to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the character’s psychological complexity and unearth deeper meanings within the novel.
