In December 2024, the editorial team of Yao Wen Jiao Zi published the top ten internet slangs of the year, among which “city不city” stood out as a unique linguistic expression. This popular phrase originates from the phenomenon of mixing Chinese and English, first used by a foreign blogger during travels across various parts of China, gaining widespread attention. In this expression, “city” is used as an adjective rather than its conventional role as a noun, challenging traditional linguistic norms and becoming a novel, dynamic cultural symbol. This phenomenon not only reflects the diversity of language use but also reveals the complex relationship between cultural exchange, online communication, and social identity. This paper aims to provide an in-depth analysis of “city不city” from grammatical, semantic, and pragmatic perspectives, while also exploring the reasons behind its popularity and its potential value in Chinese international education.
