Developing rural digital economy and promoting the integration of digital technology with agricultural production provides the feasibility of increasing agricultural output and reducing carbon emissions. Using provincial-level panel data for China from 2010 to 2020, this paper empirically finds that the development of rural digital economy effectively plays an active role in carbon emission reduction by using fixed effect model, even after robustness tests and endogeneity treatment, the role of rural digital economy in reducing the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions remains significant. In addition, the heterogeneity analysis shows that the development of rural digital economy can reduce agricultural carbon intensity in the western, eastern and northeastern regions, but not in the central region. Furthermore, the moderating effect of infrastructure was found to be a substitution between the rural digital economy and infrastructure in the effect of reducing the intensity of agricultural carbon emissions, as the development of the rural digital economy is still in its infancy. This study provides some reference for strengthening rural infrastructure, promoting the development of rural digital economy, facilitating the digitization of the agricultural industry, and helping to achieve the dual carbon goal.
