American author Ernest Hemingway’s short story Hills Like White Elephants uses an externally focused narrative to tell a conversation between a couple at a train station. The entire piece is dominated by the dialogue between the hero and heroine, supplemented by the characters’ actions, with little psychological portrayal of the characters. Previous studies have mainly focused on the metaphors of individual objects in the text and the techniques of text creation, but have not explored the narrative of objects in the text enough. Based on this, this paper tries to explore the influence and role of the “objects” in the text on the narrative structure by starting from the “objects” described in the text, and analyzes the thematic expression and narrative mode of Hills Like White Elephants by discussing the meaning behind the “objects” in the text and the relationship between “people” and “objects” in the text.
