In an aging society, gender stereotypes also exist and affect the quality of life and social status of the elderly. Regarding women’s health, social perceptions tend to believe that older women’s health status is generally worse than that of men, especially in terms of the prevalence of chronic diseases and their ability to take care of themselves. However, in recent years, with the changes in the social environment and the improvement of people’s cognitive level, data from some places show that male elderly people have a higher probability of suffering from various diseases, and their disease detection rate is significantly higher than that of female elderly people. Traditional gender role norms are the root cause of gender differences in health among elderly. To improve the health of female elderly people, we must first break the influence of traditional social gender concepts, pay attention to family relationships and intergenerational support, increase women’s economic income, increase the social participation of female elderly people, establish a more equitable and inclusive pension security system, and also policy support is needed to amend relevant laws and regulations to clearly prohibit any form of age discrimination and gender discrimination.
