According to the 52nd report of the “CNNIC Statistical Survey on Internet Development in China”, as of June 2023, the total number of Internet users in China has reached 1.079 billion. It is particularly noteworthy that the proportion of netizens aged 40 to 59 has increased from 33.2% in December 2022 to 34.5%, indicating that the Internet is further penetrating into the middle-aged population. With the age-friendly transformation of the Internet, the problem of Internet addiction among the elderly has gradually become a social phenomenon that cannot be ignored. As new immigrants in the digital age, the elderly often have difficulty distinguishing between true and false in the face of Internet technology. The widespread application of algorithm technology may cause them to fall into the whirlpool of algorithms and inadvertently become a new generation of digital workers. At the same time, their rich social experience makes it unlikely that they will easily admit that they are addicted to the Internet. Therefore, this paper uses in-depth interviews to conduct an in-depth analysis of the elderly group and concludes that technology does play an important role in the elderly’s use of the Internet, and crossing the technology gap for the elderly is our focus in the future.
