In Thunderstorm, Fanyi plays the role of a “revenge witch,” sacrificing Zhou Ping, Zhou Chong, and Si Feng to punish Zhou Puyuan and carry out a failed rainfall ceremony. At the same time, however, this ceremony highlights Fanyi’s confirmation of her own ability and her transcendence of the self and is a model for manifesting the spirit of the human subject.
