The “National English Curriculum Standards for General High School (2017 Edition)” (hereinafter referred to as the “New Curriculum Standards”) explicitly puts forward the language skill of “viewing” for the first time, which is a significant change in the curriculum content of the New Curriculum Standards. The New Curriculum Standards also shifts the specific goal of English curriculum from cultivating students’ comprehensive language application ability to fostering their core competencies of English discipline. As a new skill, “viewing” is directly related to language competence and inherently connected to the overall core competencies. Therefore, it is necessary to research the cultivating strategies related to “viewing” which aim at improving the core competencies of English discipline. Based on the learning activities of “viewing” conducted by teachers in high-quality high school English classes and combined with the compulsory PEP high school English textbooks, this paper proposes several strategic suggestions from the perspective of teachers on how to cultivate students’ skill of “viewing” in English teaching in order to enhance their core competencies of English discipline.
