The debate on the distinction between words and meanings has a long history, which began to emerge as early as the period of the pre Qin philosophers and reached its climax during the period of Wei Jin metaphysics. This article mainly discusses the distinction between language and meaning in “Wenxin Diaolong” from three aspects: Firstly, the discussion on the ideological origins and development of the distinction between language and meaning; the second is a discussion on the basic connotations of the words “speech” and “meaning”, as well as the expression and transformation between the two; the third is a discussion on the value and significance contained in the distinction between language and meaning. From a comprehensive review of “Wenxin Diaolong”, it can be seen that Liu Xie’s originality in the relationship between language and meaning is reflected in his flexible and pragmatic attitude. He is neither an absolute theory of “language can fully express meaning” nor an absolute theory of “language cannot fully express meaning”, but actively seeks methods and principles to bridge the gap between the “language can fully express meaning” theory and the “language cannot fully express meaning” theory, attempting to enter a higher level of aesthetic realm through the description of “language can fully express meaning”—where language is complete and meaning is infinite. Therefore, “Wenxin Diaolong” completed the transition from the metaphysical proposition of “distinguishing words and meanings” to the aesthetic proposition. %K 言意之辨, %K 言尽意, %K 意不尽意, %K 《文心雕龙》
