From the perspective of form, the character “yuan” is concise and full of changes, and its evolution process also reflects the development process of Chinese characters from pictographic to abstract. From the initial meaning of “beginning” or “head” to later concepts such as “vitality” and “leader”, all indicate that it is a Chinese character with profound history and rich connotations. Its origin, meaning, story, and evolution are full of fascinating history and culture. This article will start with the evolution of the character form and extension of the meaning of “yuan”. By mastering the use cases of “yuan” in different eras and exploring the cultural codes behind it from the dimensions of time and space, we will further understand the relationship between “yuan” and traditional Chinese culture, people-oriented thinking, and modern social life.
