This study compares the different translations of the term “junzi” (君子) in the Analects done by James Legge, Ku Hung-Ming, and D.C. Lau from the perspective of Skopos theory. Analysis reveals that the translations of “junzi” vary among Legge, Ku, and Lau, with Legge preferring “superior man”, Ku “good and wise man”, and Lau “gentleman”. The different translations showcase the varied connotations of “junzi”. From the perspective of Skopos theory, contemporary translations of the Analects should convey the unique cultural concept of “junzi”, so as to represent China’s positive image and disseminate Chinese wisdom while catering to the needs of the target readers. Therefore, strategies involving foreignization and annotation are more in line with the translation purpose, which renders “superior man” a preferable translation choice. %K 君子,目的论,翻译目的,中国文化
