As the global gaming industry continues to thrive, more and more game companies are turning their attention to overseas markets. In the wave of gaming globalization, localization not only plays a crucial role in assisting overseas users in understanding game content and enhancing cultural exchange but also, within the broad scope of multimodal discourse analysis, the impact of game localization becomes more apparent. This article, utilizing Zhang Delu’s multimodal discourse analysis framework, delves into the significant changes in the multimodal expressions of “Fate/Grand Order” during the localization process from the Japanese version to the Simplified Chinese version. Through in-depth analysis of multiple cases, it is discovered that during the game localization process, original linguistic, visual, and auditory elements are influenced and distorted by local culture and ideology, resulting in profound changes in various aspects such as culture, context, content, and expression, sometimes even deviating from the intentions of the original developers and localization teams. The application of multimodal discourse analysis in the field of game localization is currently in a relatively early research stage. However, this article believes that the use of multimodal analysis not only breaks through the narrow perspective of traditional textual translation but also, when combined with rich case studies of game localization, contributes to the further development of translation studies, localization studies, and multimodal studies.
