This paper explores Gideon Toury’s Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS) and its revolutionary impact on the field of translation studies. It begins by tracing the development of Toury’s theory, highlighting how it emerged from essentialism to redefine translation through a historical relativism perspective. The paper discusses the indelible contributions of Toury’s theory to the methodological research in translation studies, despite the controversies and acceptance issues within the international academic community. By evaluating the modern applications and critiques of Toury’s theory, and analyzing his contributions and their influence on the discipline of translation studies, this paper provides insights into understanding and assessing modern translation theories and outlines prospects for future research.
