Iconicity, proposed by cognitive linguistics, serves as a valuable framework for analyzing literary works. It examines the relationship between linguistic form and meaning, aiding translators in grasping the underlying significance of literary pieces and accurately conveying this essence in translation. This study focuses on the translation of Alai’s The Song of King Gesar by Howard Goldblatt, analyzing the translator’s choices in reproducing the form and meaning of the original work through three aspects of resemblance theory: imagistic resemblance, analogical resemblance, and metaphoric resemblance. The paper argues that in translating literary works, translators should deeply comprehend the imagistic features of the original text and employ appropriate translation techniques to maintain as much resemblance as possible between the translator’s output and the original author’s intent.
