After the Second World War, in the design development of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Ulm Design Institute was an indispensible symbol. The viewpoint proposed by its third president, Thomas Maldonado, that “design is science and technology, not art”, is no longer suitable for today’s design development. It unilaterally attributes design to science and technology, neglecting the cultivation of artistic foundations. However, in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s, the post-war world economic development, Germany’s solid industrial foundation and innovation-oriented policies, as well as domestic turmoil and the solidarity between students and intellectuals, led to the German student movement in the 1960s, making universities adopt an open attitude towards social and political issues. The unique history and culture of Germany, as well as Thomas Maldonado’s later appointment to the Ulm Design Institute, were all comprehensive factors that contributed to the formulation of this design philosophy. %K 托马斯·马尔多纳多,乌尔姆设计学院
