The degree of linguistic similarity is essential to language conflict. Studies have shown that when two languages are similar to each other, language conflict intensifies. Due to confusion, executive control is needed to distinguish and use the two languages correctly. However, other studies suggest that increasing linguistic similarity may reduce or not affect language conflict. This paper aims to comprehensively explore the explanations and mechanisms of these ideas, as well as the direction and focus of future research to deepen our understanding of the effects of language similarity on language control. This will help improve our understanding of areas such as cognitive control, bilingual education, and cross-cultural communication, and provide guidance and inspiration for these areas.
