Plant volatiles not only play an important role in the behavior and habits of herbivorous insects, but also have an important impact on their growth, development and physiological and biochemical metabolism. The relationship between them is currently a research hotspot in insect chemical ecology, which can provide new ideas for the research of pest control technology. This paper re-viewed the types and basic characteristics of plant volatiles, the role of plant volatiles in the be-havior and habits of herbivorous insects, and the effects of plant volatiles on the growth, devel-opment, physiology and biochemistry of herbivorous insects.
