Since the 21st century, cultural exchanges between countries have shown an increasing trend. The overseas dissemination of literary works is an important way to convey local culture. However, a few domestic studies on the translation of local cultural works have affected the outward dissemination of Chinese culture to a certain extent. This paper analyzes Frog by Mo Yan and its English version by Howard Goldblatt, mainly studies how Howard Goldblatt uses domestication, foreignization and the combination of domestication and foreignization strategies to properly translate culture-loaded words with Chinese characteristics, such as proverbs and idioms, so as to realize the greatest loyalty to the content and style of the original text, reduce the unfamiliar feeling of the target language readers to the foreign language text as much as possible, avoid cultural conflict and enhance the readability of the translation. This paper finds that Howard Goldblatt does not stick to just one translation strategy when translating culture-loaded words. He appropriately uses the strategies of domestication, foreignization, and the combination of domestication and foreignization according to the specific situation. The three strategies complement each other, and the translation is lively, clear, and easy to understand. This study is of certain theoretical and practical significance and provides a good example for future translation of Chinese works.
