In Jane Eyre, the male characters discipline the female body through the gaze full of violence and desire, seizing space and power, while the heroine Jane is forced to stay in the space with narrow vision such as windowsills and corners. To obtain wider vision, Jane resists the male authority through counter-gaze. In this process, her visual power grows stronger and reaches its peak marked by Rochester’s loss of eyesight. However, Jane who internalizes the gazers’ values gazes at her body in terms of male aesthetic standards. She finally returns to the traditional female identity of being a virtuous wife confined to the limited domestic space. The novel expresses the author’s regret at the weakness of the female individual power.
