Based on the Balanced Corpus of Modern Japanese Written Language (BCCWJ), this study uses quantitative analysis methods to conduct a detailed study on the usages of ¡°MOUSUKOSI¡± and ¡°MOUCHOTTO¡± of compound adverbs. This paper draws the following conclusions: ¡°MOUSUKOSI¡± and ¡°MOUCHOTTO¡± have five usages: ¡°urging¡±, ¡°will£¿wish¡±, ¡°counterfactual¡±, ¡°necessary judgment¡± and ¡°assumption¡±. In addition, in their respective usages, it can be seen that in their syntactic envi-ronment, they tend to have a common relationship with specific grammatical forms including con-ditional clauses.
